Grayson’s birth story

39 weeks pregnant and almost 100 degrees outside. We took Maya swimming all morning, went to lunch (I ate spicy chicken), went to the grocery store, I vacuumed out my car and proceeded to put away groceries, laundry, and clean (nesting much?), drank a ton of raspberry tea, played outside more with Maya, and then ate spicy kabobs with pineapple. I started timing contractions around 8 and they were pretty regularly coming though they weren’t painful yet. Around 9, after I had regular contractions for an hour, I alerted the troops that it might be “baby time”. I timed for another hour and they were still consistently 4-5 minutes apart. There was a little increase in intensity so we decided that we were definitely making the trip and packed the bags. My mom arrived around 10:30 to stay with Maya, and we loaded up the car and headed out a few minutes later. I continued to have increasing contractions in the car. As soon as we got to the hospital, I felt pretty certain we would be staying.

They checked us in to labor and delivery. They checked me pretty quick and I had not progressed any since my dr appt on Monday, so they said they would just monitor me and see if the contractions did anything.

I felt certain that we would be staying as the contractions got stronger. They checked me about an hour later and I hadn’t dilated anymore, but I had effaced, though he was still pretty high. They checked with dr. and they decided to admit me and start bloodwork so that I could get my epidural. I labored until about 2:30 am. This was a good solid 2.5 hours of painful contractions. Yikes! Not a time period that I would like to relive. I got my epidural and fairly quickly got some relief. I laid in bed and rested while Mom and Jared chatted away beside me. I slept off and on and they checked me about every hour. I continued to make progress, but somewhere around 5:30 it seemed I wasn’t going to progress anymore. The water bag was stubborn and kept bulging, but didn’t break. Once the doctor arrived at 7, they broke my water and he came down the birth canal very quickly. The dr. left for a few moments and I started pushing with the nurse. After about 5 pushes, the nurse said, “get the dr back. we have a good pusher here and he’s coming quick!” They made me stop pushing to wait for the dr to get dressed. About 5 more pushes with the dr and he was OUT! And he was a BIG GUY!

I got major props from all the drs and nurses for being a champion pusher and delivering a nearly 10lb baby in less than 15 minutes.IMG_4390

Everyone is doing great! Grayson has some bruising from his quick exit and has some clogged tear ducts that the drs were a little concerned about, so we won’t be released until tomorrow.

Big sister is doing great and loves her baby brudder!

More pics to come!
